CEA Nageswaran Proposes Reintroducing E10 Petrol Alongside E20

Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran has recommended that the government make E10 petrol available at fuel stations alongside the existing E20 variant. This proposal aims to address public concerns regarding the performance and potential engine wear of older vehicles using 20 per cent ethanol-blended fuel. Nageswaran stated that while E20 may cause a marginal reduction in mileage due to lower energy density, there is no evidence that it causes damage to engine components. He cited studies from the US and India, including testing by ARAI, to support the safety of the higher ethanol blend. The government mandated the rollout of E20 fuel nationwide in April 2026 as part of its strategy to curb pollution and reduce oil import dependency.
