Celtic suffer third straight Europa League defeat at Celta Vigo

· Sports · BBC Sport

Celtic lost 2-1 to Celta Vigo, marking their third consecutive Europa League defeat and leaving them 35th of 36 teams in the competition. After taking the lead through Mika Baur on 47 minutes, Celtic succumbed to two goals from Javi Rodriguez in three minutes either side of half-time. Manager Martin O'Neill criticised refereeing decisions and marginal moments, including a free-kick not given before Celta's equaliser and a Liam Scales header that struck the bar. Former Scotland striker James McFadden labelled the performances 'not good enough' and 'way short' for European competition.

Why it matters

Celtic's European campaign hangs by a thread after three straight defeats, jeopardising their progression chances despite a domestic league win over Hearts. The team must win remaining away fixtures to keep alive their hopes of advancing from the competition.
