Centre Aims to Remove 200,000 Old Commercial Vehicles in Delhi-NCR

The Centre is scaling up the PARIVARTAN initiative to remove approximately 200,000 aged BS-IV and older trucks and buses from Delhi and the National Capital Region before winter air pollution peaks. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, over 1,450 vehicle owners have registered on the PARIVARTAN portal, resulting in 35 vehicles scrapped and over 50 sold outside the NCR. Government data indicates that Delhi-NCR hosts 511,000 total trucks and 36,649 diesel buses, with commercial transport responsible for 36 per cent of regional PM2.5 emissions. Alwar resident Mahendra Singh became the first beneficiary to purchase a replacement vehicle under the scheme on August 19. Officials are currently focused on establishing the necessary administrative and financial infrastructure to expand the programme.
