Centre appoints 7 Delhi HC judges, withholds approval for one collegium pick

The Centre on Saturday appointed seven judicial officers as judges of the Delhi high court, despite the Supreme Court collegium having recommended eight names on September 10. The appointments cleared by Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal include two permanent judges and five additional judges. The Centre withheld approval for Gurvinder Pal Singh, one of the eight names recommended by the collegium. Delhi high court is currently functioning with a strength of 44 against a sanctioned strength of 60, and the approved appointments will take the strength to 51 judges. Among those appointed, Sanjay Sharma-I and Bharat Parashar are serving as principal district and sessions judges and secretary general of the Supreme Court respectively, while Arun Bhardwaj is the registrar general of the Delhi high court.
Why it matters
The Delhi high court gains five additional and two permanent judges, easing its vacancies but leaving one collegium recommendation in limbo. The withheld approval for Gurvinder Pal Singh leaves an unresolved gap between the collegium's recommendation and the Centre's notification.
