Centre Clears E100 Ethanol Fuel for Certified Vehicles

· Automobile · Indian Express, Times of India

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified changes to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to permit the use of E100 fuel for specifically designed and certified vehicles. E100 consists of nearly pure ethanol and is distinct from the E20 fuel currently available for standard vehicles. The government also raised the weight limit for light petrol and diesel vehicles to 3,500 kg. This move is part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on crude oil imports and address the current account deficit.

Why it matters

The introduction of E100 fuel supports the government's push for alternative energy and could reduce India's reliance on imported crude oil.
