Centre Cuts Customs Duty on Edible Oils to Ease Retail Prices

The central government has reduced the basic customs duty on several edible oils effective from September 24, 2026. The duty on crude soybean oil and crude palm oil has been lowered from 10% to 5%, while refined varieties drop from 32.5% to 27.5%. The duty on crude sunflower oil has been completely abolished, moving from 10% to nil, and refined sunflower oil duty is reduced to 22.5%. Vegetable oil prices in India have climbed by nearly 20% over the past year. The tariff cuts aim to reduce import costs and boost consumption ahead of the September-November festive season.
Why it matters
Indian consumers and households face lower cooking oil prices during the festive season, while domestic refiners and importers adjust to cheaper raw material costs from major suppliers like Malaysia, Indonesia, Argentina, Russia and Ukraine.
