Centre Denies Screening Permission for 31 Films at IDSFFK
· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express
The Union ministry of information and broadcasting has denied screening permission for 31 films selected for the 18th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK). Kerala minister for culture PC Vishnunadh stated that the ministry provided no reasons for the denial, despite the state government submitting detailed synopses for the requested titles. The festival, scheduled to take place in Thiruvananthapuram later this month, requires central clearance for films that lack a Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate. Among the restricted films are documentaries covering sanitation workers in Delhi, memories of a Delhi landmark, life in conflict-torn Gaza, and tribal life in Attappady. The Kerala State Chalachitra Akademi has requested an exemption for these films and is currently awaiting a response from the central department.
Why it matters
The denial affects the screening of 31 independent films at a major state-run festival, raising concerns about the transparency of the central government's film approval process.
