Centre Discusses Reintroducing E10 Petrol Alongside E20

The Indian government has initiated preliminary discussions on reintroducing E10 petrol as an additional fuel option alongside the existing E20 blend. This move follows recent support from Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran, who suggested providing E10 specifically for vehicles manufactured before April 2023. The E20 mandate, which requires 20% ethanol blending, has faced criticism from owners of older vehicles concerned about potential engine damage and reduced fuel efficiency. While no final decision has been reached, the government is currently consulting with the automobile and fuel industries to assess the feasibility of the proposal. India achieved its 20% ethanol-blending target in 2025, five years ahead of the original 2030 deadline.
