· India · The Hindu, Zee News
The central government appointed the Chief Justices of the Delhi, Gujarat, and Telangana High Courts to the Supreme Court on Monday. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the elevations of Justice Sunita Agarwal, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh on X. These new appointments raise the working strength of the apex court to 37 judges, leaving a single vacancy against its sanctioned strength of 38. The three judges are scheduled to take their oaths of office on October 6 following recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 28. The appointments bring judges with extensive jurisdictional experience from Allahabad, Bombay, Patna, and Jharkhand into the country's highest court.
Why it matters
Filling these vacancies strengthens judicial capacity at the Supreme Court as it tackles a massive backlog of pending cases.
