Centre Explores E10 Petrol Return Via High-Octane Variants to Ease Mileage Concerns

The Union Petroleum Ministry is discussing with state-run oil marketing companies whether branded fuels such as XP95, Speed, and Power95 can be sold in an E10 formulation. The move comes in response to growing consumer outrage over the negative impact of standard E20 petrol on older engines and mileage. Currently, Octane 95 accounts for roughly 15% of total petrol sales by OMCs, up from 4% in March. Officials are assessing whether a cheaper regular E10 or a premium Octane 95 option would be more acceptable to consumers. The discussions are in their initial stages, and a final decision has not yet been taken.
