Centre Issues Advisory to TV Channels on Debate Standards and AI Use

· India · Hindustan Times, Business Standard

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory on Wednesday instructing television channels to exercise editorial control over panel discussions and debates. Broadcasters were told to carefully select panellists, brief them in advance, and implement immediate remedial measures such as muting participants or cutting feeds if comments become derogatory, abusive, or inflammatory. The ministry also directed channels to avoid live coverage of anti-terror operations and to use only Survey of India-approved maps in broadcasts and graphics. Furthermore, channels were told to limit artificial intelligence tools to an assisting role without compromising news accuracy or authenticity. The advisory follows observations by the Inter-Departmental Committee that several private satellite channels were violating the Programme Code under the Cable Television Networks Act.

Why it matters

News broadcasters and television journalists must tighten editorial oversight and pre-screening of guests to comply with statutory standards or face punitive action from the government.
