Centre Issues FAQs After Opposition Questions 7.8% GDP Growth
· Business · Times of India, India Today
The Centre released FAQs on Wednesday through the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) to clarify the methodology behind India's 7.8% real GDP growth in the April-June quarter of FY27, after Congress leaders questioned the credibility of the figure and pointed to a downward revision in the previous year's nominal GDP estimate. The FAQs cover double deflation, negative implicit deflators, the gap between GDP deflator and CPI/WPI inflation, nominal versus real GVA, statistical discrepancies, and revisions to the GDP series. The government rejected allegations that last year's figures were revised down to inflate current growth, noting that Q1 FY26 nominal GDP was first estimated at Rs 86.05 lakh crore under the old 2011-12 base-year series and later revised to Rs 80 lakh crore under the new 2022-23 base year, with the two figures belonging to different series that cannot be directly compared. Why it matters
The clarification matters for India's economic credibility at a time when opposition parties are questioning whether official growth numbers reflect reality, and the methodology changes directly affect how investors, analysts, and policymakers interpret quarterly GDP signals.
