Centre Notifies CAPF Act Ahead of Supreme Court Hearing

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

The Centre notified the Central Armed Police Forces General Administration Act, 2026, bringing it into force from October 8. The notification comes a week before a Supreme Court special bench is scheduled to hear petitions challenging the law filed by serving CAPF cadre officers. The special bench will hear two petitions on October 15, addressing the Centre's alleged failure to implement a May 2025 order on cadre review and promotions alongside the challenge to the new Act. Serving cadre officers argue that the legislation circumvents the Supreme Court judgment and fixes posts such as director general and special DG exclusively for IPS officers. The Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on March 27 and passed by both houses of Parliament in April amid opposition protests over its impact on cadre morale.

Why it matters

The new law directly impacts the career progression and leadership prospects of thousands of serving cadre officers across India's paramilitary forces.
