Centre Sets Lower Foodgrain Target for 2026-27 Amid El Niño Conditions

Amid adverse conditions caused by El Niño, the central government has set a foodgrain production target of 373.93 million tonnes for 2026-27 in New Delhi. This target is 2.63 million tonnes lower than the estimated output of 376.56 million tonnes recorded during 2025-26. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that the targets were determined through state-wise consultations based on water availability and soil moisture. The government plans to avoid water-intensive crops in low-rainfall regions and focus instead on pulses and oilseeds. Chouhan added that fertilizer requirements for the rabi season are pegged at 380 lakh metric tonnes, with adequate opening stocks available.
