Centre Tells Kerala HC That AIIMS Proposal Under PMSSY Is Not In Any Budget

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

The central government informed the Kerala High Court on Wednesday that a proposal for establishing an AIIMS in Keralam under the PMSSY scheme has not been included in any budget announcement. A bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V M was hearing two pleas filed by public action groups seeking an AIIMS facility in Kasaragod or Kottayam. The Centre stated that a proposal to extend the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana for another five years is currently undergoing inter-ministerial consultations. The court noted that the AIIMS proposal has been pending since 2016 and directed authorities to take a decision without further delay based on state requirements. The central government also cited previous approvals of super-speciality blocks in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Alappuzha medical colleges to expand regional healthcare access.

Why it matters

The decision directly impacts healthcare infrastructure development for millions of residents in Keralam who have long demanded a premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences facility.
