Centre Tells SC It Can't Distinguish Reel Makers From Journalists During Anti-SIR Protests

· India · Indian Express, India Today, Live Law

The Centre informed the Supreme Court that it is difficult to distinguish between a 'reel maker' and an 'independent journalist' during protests. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta made this statement while responding to allegations of sexual harassment faced by women journalists at the hands of male police officers during anti-SIR protests. He acknowledged that no woman should be inappropriately dealt with, including female police personnel. The court is hearing 32 petitions related to alleged police excesses, SIR, and the powers of the Election Commission. Mehta said a response on affidavit regarding an FIR sought by a woman journalist will be filed within a week.

Why it matters

Women journalists covering protests face risks of sexual harassment by police, and the lack of clarity in identifying legitimate journalists hampers accountability. This issue affects press freedom and the safety of women in media during public demonstrations.
