Centre to Assess Drought in Karnataka and Maharashtra
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that central teams will visit Karnataka and Maharashtra on October 3 to evaluate the drought situation. The assessment follows concerns over low water availability affecting the Kharif crop and upcoming Rabi season planning. Maharashtra has already declared a state-level drought, with nearly two-thirds of its territory impacted. The Centre has advised states to prepare water budgets and prioritize crops like pulses and oilseeds in areas with moisture stress. Chouhan noted that drought-like conditions are also affecting Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Why it matters
The assessment will determine federal aid and guide agricultural planning for millions of farmers facing potential yield losses due to water scarcity.
