Centre To Deploy Kanda Express To Curb Rising Onion Prices

The Indian government will begin operating the Kanda Express from Monday to transport onions from Nasik to Delhi, Chennai, Kochi, and Guwahati to address a 45% year-on-year surge in prices. The average retail price of onions reached Rs 42 per kg on Saturday, marking a 19% increase over the last month. Officials attribute the price rise to reports of a 5% to 7% decline in kharif output in Maharashtra. To manage supply, NAFED and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation have procured 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions, with procurement prices recently revised to Rs 2,645 per quintal to accelerate the process. Retail prices for sugar are also rising, reaching an average of Rs 62.5 per kg across the country.
