CERC Allows Renewable Energy Projects to Retain Grid Access for Compensation

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission has introduced a compensation mechanism that allows renewable energy developers to retain their grid connectivity despite missing implementation deadlines. Under the new order, developers failing to submit land ownership documents, secure finance, or meet commercial operation dates can seek additional time instead of facing automatic revocation. Data from the Central Transmission Utility of India Ltd shows at least 5.3 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity faces connectivity revocation up to October. Developers must meet strict eligibility criteria, such as securing minimum thresholds of required land at least 15 working days before original deadlines, to qualify for extensions. The Commission noted that the graded compensation structure ensures scarce grid resources are managed while granting relief to projects at various stages of implementation.
