Thirteen of the 35 municipal councillors elected in Chandigarh in 2021 have changed their political allegiance during the current term, significantly altering the House's composition. The BJP has emerged as the primary beneficiary, increasing its strength from 12 to 18 councillors as six defectors joined its ranks. Several councillors, including Poonam, Gurcharanjit Singh, and Neha Musawat, have switched parties multiple times, often ahead of annual mayoral elections. This political churn has occurred without voters having another opportunity to cast their ballots since the 2021 election. Civic election processes for the city are expected to begin next month.
