ChatGPT to Introduce Hidden Watermarks for AI-Written Text in Europe
· Technology · Android Authority, The Hindu
OpenAI plans to introduce hidden watermarks for text generated by ChatGPT and Codex, starting in Europe. The rollout is driven by the EU AI Act, which requires AI providers to make generated text identifiable in a machine-readable way. The new watermarking technology, called textGrain, adds a statistical signal to the model's word choices that detectors can identify. Over the coming weeks, OpenAI will apply invisible watermarks to eligible EU text outputs while allowing global API customers to opt in for select models. OpenAI noted that shorter text and edits can weaken the watermark, and detectors may produce false positives or negatives.
Why it matters
The new watermarking system creates accountability for AI-generated content, impacting students, educators, and businesses across Europe.
