Chelsea agree £7.5m fee for Villa's Martinez
· Sports · BBC Sport
Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign 33-year-old Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for a fee of £7.5 million. The move follows concerns regarding the performance of current first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who recently committed errors in a 3-2 victory against Fulham. Martinez is expected to travel to London to undergo a medical examination ahead of the transfer deadline. Aston Villa opted to sell the goalkeeper after securing Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma for approximately £30 million. Chelsea also retain 18-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders, who is scheduled to debut in the Carabao Cup against Luton Town.
Why it matters
The transfer signals a significant shift in Chelsea's goalkeeping strategy and adds a veteran presence to the squad following recent high-profile errors by Robert Sanchez. It also continues a series of active player dealings between Chelsea and Aston Villa.
