Chelsea Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez Joins Como on Season-Long Loan
· Sports · BBC Sport
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has joined Italian club Como on a season-long loan following a series of defensive errors and the arrival of Emiliano Martinez. Sanchez lost his starting position after allowing Josh King's shot to slip past him in a 3-2 Premier League win against Fulham. Chelsea subsequently signed Martinez from Aston Villa in a £7.5m deal, dropping Sanchez from the matchday squad for their recent win against Brighton. The 28-year-old Spaniard made 112 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Brighton in 2023, winning the Conference League and the Club World Cup. Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, hold an option to buy the goalkeeper at the end of the loan period.
Why it matters
The transfer reshapes Chelsea's goalkeeping hierarchy following the arrival of Emiliano Martinez and Mike Penders, while giving Como an experienced Premier League goalkeeper ahead of their Champions League campaign.
