Chemical Tanker Catches Fire in Romanian Waters Near Black Sea

· World · The Hindu, Bloomberg, Reuters

A Comoros-flagged chemical and oil tanker, the Yara J, caught fire late Wednesday while anchored in Romanian territorial waters southeast of the Sulina canal. All crew members successfully evacuated the vessel and are reported to be safe. Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruta stated that radar systems did not detect any drones in the area, leaving the cause of the fire currently unknown. This incident follows a series of attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea, with five vessels hit off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria since early October. The region remains a critical corridor for Ukrainian grain exports, which have faced significant logistical pressure due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Why it matters

The recurring attacks on commercial vessels near NATO's eastern flank threaten the security of vital grain export routes and heighten risks for global maritime shipping in the Black Sea.
