Chennai Collectorate Postpones Pattinapakkam Public Consultation After Boycott Threat

· India · The Hindu, Sportstar

The Chennai Collectorate has postponed a public consultation meeting regarding the construction of a new secretariat and legislative assembly in Foreshore Estate, Pattinapakkam. The meeting, originally scheduled for November 3, 2026, was moved to November 5 following a boycott call issued by residents and representatives of 13 coastal fishing villages from Triplicane to Foreshore Estate. Local fisherfolk argue that they received no written communication about the consultation and fear the project will severely impact their livelihoods and restrict sea access. Chennai District Collector S. Malathi Helen decided to postpone the event after consulting with senior state government officials on Monday evening. Officials at the Chennai Collectorate have not provided a specific reason for the delay.

Why it matters

The protest highlights local community resistance and livelihood concerns surrounding major infrastructure projects in coastal Chennai.
