Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 15-kilometre Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2 on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 4,900 crore, the new corridor features 11 elevated stations along Corridor 4, also known as the Yellow Line. Passenger services on the new stretch are scheduled to begin at 4 PM on Sunday and operate until 9 PM. Regular services from Monday will run daily from 7 AM to 9 PM, with train frequencies varying between 10 and 15 minutes during peak and non-peak hours. The corridor includes a 3.7-kilometre double-decker structure and advanced signalling systems to improve connectivity between Chennai's western suburbs and the city centre.
Why it matters
The new metro corridor significantly cuts daily travel time for commuters travelling between Chennai's western suburbs and the city centre, while offering a high-capacity public transit alternative.
