Child Dies and Over 70 Fall Ill After Malaria Tablets in Andhra Pradesh

· India · Indian Express, Zee News

Medical teams have been rushed to two primary health centres in Polavaram district after a seven-year-old girl died and over 70 people fell ill following the distribution of chloroquine tablets. The medication was administered during a fever-surveillance camp in Gollaguppa village last week amid a surge in malaria cases. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a probe and directed senior medical officials to monitor the situation on the ground. District Collector K Dinesh Kumar stated that the girl lost consciousness due to a drop in blood glucose levels before passing away at Bhadrachalam Area Hospital in Telangana. At least 15 children are among those affected, with 53 patients currently undergoing treatment and their condition reported as stable.

Why it matters

Families in Gollaguppa village face immediate health risks following the adverse reaction to anti-malaria medication, prompting emergency medical interventions by state authorities. The incident has triggered a high-level government probe and quality-control testing of the chloroquine batch distributed during the surveillance camp.
