China Censors Viral Footage of Devastating Tibet Floods
· World · India Today, Hindustan Times
Chinese authorities have removed viral social media footage showing flash floods destroying an immigration centre at Gyirong Port on the Nepal-Tibet border. While the disaster has caused widespread destruction in Nepal, where deaths have exceeded 500, Beijing has reported only five deaths and 558 missing in the Tibet region. The state-run media has released only a single frame from the viral video, while all other independent accounts and survivor pleas have been wiped from the Chinese internet. Foreign journalists remain unable to access the region to verify the scale of the devastation due to strict government travel restrictions. Critics have accused the Chinese Communist Party of suppressing information and preventing local rescue efforts.
Why it matters
The censorship obscures the true scale of the humanitarian disaster in Tibet, preventing families from receiving information and blocking independent assessment of the flood's impact.
