Beijing stated it is in close communication and cooperation with Russia regarding infectious disease prevention after a suspected case of pneumonic plague in Siberia. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun confirmed the bilateral coordination during a regular briefing on Tuesday. The diplomatic remarks follow the death of a worker at a plague research institute in Russia's Irkutsk region, which prompted authorities to place nearly 200 contacts under medical observation. Pneumonic plague is a severe lung infection that spreads between humans through respiratory droplets. The World Health Organization has assessed the risk of the plague spreading outside Russia as very low.
