China, Iran among countries that have used AI to aid spying, Anthropic says

San Francisco-based AI lab Anthropic has reported that state-aligned actors in China and Iran used artificial intelligence to conduct surveillance operations. The report identifies multiple cases between January and July where models were used to monitor ethnic minorities and pro-democracy figures. In one instance, Iranian authorities reportedly developed a method to identify individuals through their social media accounts. Anthropic also accused Chinese developers, Moonshot and Deepseek, of deceptively using Claude data to improve their own models without permission. The lab has shut down the accounts involved in these misuse cases.
