China has launched construction on the Pinglu Canal to establish a direct river-to-sea shipping route connecting inland waterways to the Beibu Gulf. The 134.2-kilometre-long infrastructure project aims to significantly slash transit times and freight costs for cargo moving to and from Southeast Asia. By linking the Xijiang River system directly to the maritime network, the canal provides southwestern Chinese provinces with an alternative export corridor. The engineering initiative is designed to boost regional trade integration and economic activity across the ASEAN trade bloc. The project forms a central component of Beijing's broader transport and logistical connectivity strategy in southern China.
