China-Linked Spamouflage Accounts Posing as US Voters on X
· World · The Independent, Times of India
The influence campaign known as Spamouflage is active on X, with accounts linked to China posing as US voters to post divisive content regarding American politics and elections. New York-based firm Graphika identified these accounts, noting they frequently question election integrity and the legitimacy of US democracy. While analysts suggest the campaign is ineffective at swaying political opinion, it is reportedly used to harass the Chinese diaspora and suppress specific viewpoints. Graphika observed that some accounts amplify MAGA-styled personas or have repurposed existing accounts, such as a former Philippine culture blog, to spread pro-China content. The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not provide a comment on the findings.
Why it matters
The operation demonstrates how foreign actors use social media to sow discord in US domestic politics and silence dissent within diaspora communities.
