China Rejects India's Ladakh Naming Drive, Calls Action 'Invalid'

· World · Hindustan Times, Telegraph India

China has strongly criticized India's decision to unveil standard names for 28 locations in Ladakh, dismissing the move as illegal and invalid. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated in Beijing that China has never recognized the Union Territory of Ladakh. On October 2, the Union home ministry announced standard names for 10 peaks, two passes, three mountains, seven land areas, two glaciers, two water bodies, a valley, and a river. The Indian government stated that the initiative aims to facilitate accurate recognition and improve public awareness of these geographical features. This naming drive follows similar actions by China over recent years to assert territorial claims along the Line of Control, including naming locations in Arunachal Pradesh.

Why it matters

This diplomatic friction underscores the ongoing territorial disputes along the India-China border and complicates bilateral relations between the two nations.
