China’s Communist Party Prepares for Generational Leadership Shift

The Chinese Communist Party will hold a Central Committee meeting from October 26th to 29th to discuss party governance and prepare for a major leadership transition. While President Xi Jinping remains in control, the party is looking toward the seventh generation of leaders born in the 1960s and 1970s to fill senior roles. These officials, who matured during China’s era of economic opening, are expected to eventually replace the current leadership cohort. President Xi, who is 73, previously abolished presidential term limits and consolidated power by dismantling the influence of the sixth generation through an anti-corruption campaign. The upcoming five-yearly party congress in 2027 will formalize the appointments for the leadership team serving until 2032.
