· World · Indian Express, Al Jazeera, The Hindu
China is scheduled to launch its Chang'e-7 lunar probe on August 24 Beijing time aboard a Long March 5 Y14 rocket from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan. The robotic mission aims to investigate permanently shadowed craters at the lunar south pole in search of water ice. The spacecraft consists of an orbiter, lander, rover, and a specialised hopper designed to navigate sloped terrain. Planetary scientist James Head described the project as one of the most ambitious robotic lunar missions ever attempted.
Why it matters
The mission advances global lunar exploration and provides critical resource data for future crewed space programs.
