While state media has covered the disaster, officials have restricted independent reporting and penalized individuals for speculating on casualty figures. This approach contrasts with the 2008 earthquake, which saw greater public discourse regarding infrastructure and government transparency. The government has also limited access to the flood zone, allowing only selected state-run journalists to report from the area.
