China Warns of High Risk of Lake Burst and Second Flood

China has issued a high-risk warning for a barrier lake near the Nepal-Tibet border, stating it could burst and trigger a second wave of downstream floods. The barrier lake formed after a Wednesday flash flood caused by a mountain glacier collapsing into a river in the Langtang Lirung peak region. As of Friday morning, state broadcaster CCTV reported that an estimated 2.5 million cubic metres of water had accumulated, with another three million cubic metres expected to flow in between Thursday and Saturday. China's Ministry of Water Resources stated that the lake has already started to overflow, leading to heavy rains in the area and halting rescue operations. Emergency services remain stuck at a village about seven kilometres from Gyirong Port, a major land crossing between Nepal and China that was hit by the initial flood. Nepali authorities have also issued warnings, advising residents to stay away from the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.
