Chinese hackers spy on thousands after breaching ConnectWise cloud backup service

· Technology · TechCrunch

Chinese state-aligned hackers breached ConnectWise's cloud backup service and stole application credentials, allowing them to log into customer Microsoft-hosted environments and access emails and files. Microsoft researchers say the hackers used AI agents called ARTEX to rapidly compromise approximately 2,250 organizations at a rate of nearly 3,000 attempted sign-ins per minute. The same AI framework was previously used in a compromise of South Korea's financial systems. ConnectWise has paused access to its cloud backup system while investigating the breach and working to restore service.

Why it matters

Thousands of companies relying on ConnectWise for data backup are at risk of unauthorized access to their emails and files, with defenders having little time to detect the AI-driven intrusions.
