Chinese Rescuers Reach Destroyed Gyirong Border Immigration Centre

· India · India Today, Al Jazeera

Chinese rescue teams have reached the Gyirong immigration centre on the Nepal-Tibet border, four days after massive flash floods buried the facility under mud and debris. The site, which serves as a critical checkpoint for pilgrims travelling to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, was found in ruins with no surviving infrastructure. An 80-member team from the Isha Foundation was present at the centre when the disaster struck on August 25. While the Chinese government has established contact with approximately 400 Indian citizens on their side of the border, nearly 320 Indians remain missing in Nepal.

Why it matters

The destruction of this key border crossing has left hundreds of Indian pilgrims stranded or missing, creating a significant humanitarian crisis for the Ministry of External Affairs to manage.
