Chouhan Says El Nino Unlikely to Impact Crop Production

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated in New Delhi on Tuesday that the country's current rainfall deficit of around 12% is unlikely to negatively impact overall crop production. Speaking after a two-day national agricultural conference on Rabi crops, Chouhan ruled out any major national crisis stemming from prevailing El Nino conditions. The Union government has set a foodgrain production target of 373.93 million tonne for 2026-27, which is slightly lower than the actual production of 376.56 million tonne recorded in 2025-26. Chouhan also announced that the Centre will launch an awareness campaign to help farmers leverage free trade agreements and access international markets with zero import duty. Additionally, the Minister noted that the government must balance domestic prices following recent cuts to import duties on various edible oils.
