CIA Declassifies Presidential Briefings on Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda

· World · The Hindu, Times of India, Al Jazeera

The U.S. government has declassified dozens of presidential daily briefs detailing intelligence gathered on Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda leading up to the September 11 attacks. The documents, released on the 25th anniversary of the hijackings, include reports ranging from a 1998 warning about terrorist interest in weapons of mass destruction to a September 12, 2001, assessment of the plot. CIA Director John Ratcliffe described the release as the agency’s largest-ever declassification of these highly sensitive intelligence summaries. The files reveal how security analysts tracked bin Laden’s movements, support systems, and evolving operational tactics. A separate batch of records, including interviews with former Clinton and Bush administration officials, was also released by the National Archives.

Why it matters

This release provides a rare, transparent look at the intelligence community's internal warnings and the limitations of U.S. national security assessments prior to the 2001 attacks.
