CIC Orders Fresh Adjudication on POSH Compliance in Public Banks
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
The Central Information Commission has directed the Ministry of Women and Child Development to provide a fair hearing to an applicant seeking information on workplace sexual harassment compliance in public sector banks. Applicant Chayan Ghosh Chowdhury requested details regarding the establishment of Internal Committees, annual returns, and litigation data as mandated by the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013. The ministry previously stated it did not maintain this information in a consolidated form and suggested the applicant approach individual banks. Information Commissioner P R Ramesh ordered the ministry's First Appellate Authority to reconsider the appeal after noting that the record of the previous disposal was missing. The commission has not yet formed an opinion on the adequacy of the information provided.
Why it matters
The order ensures greater transparency regarding the implementation of anti-harassment laws within India's public banking sector, potentially forcing better reporting of compliance data.
