· India · The Hindu, Zee News
Centre of Indian Trade Unions activists burned an effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Tirupati on Saturday to demand his resignation. Protesters alleged that 13 crore votes were deleted across the country under the guise of the Special Intensive Revision process. CITU district vice-president Vandavasi Nagaraju accused the Election Commission of India of functioning in favour of the BJP government and undermining democratic rights. The union also condemned the detention and obstruction of protesters attempting to march to Delhi to voice their dissent. The ECI has not yet issued a public response to the allegations.
Why it matters
The protest highlights escalating political tensions over electoral roll revisions and the operational independence of India's election watchdog, directly affecting voter rights and democratic accountability.
