CJI Declines Meeting With Congress Leaders Over Separation Of Powers
· India · Times of India, India Today
CJI Surya Kant declined requests from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi to hold a meeting in New Delhi regarding vote manipulation allegations. In an email response communicated through Supreme Court sources, the CJI stated that the issue was already pending adjudication before the court and that a meeting would contravene the separation of powers. The response noted that the Supreme Court possesses an adjudicatory role under the Constitution rather than administrative power in this regard. The CJI advised that the party or concerned individuals could file a formal petition before 4pm Monday for priority hearing alongside similar pending matters. Kharge had earlier announced plans for the delegation meeting amid protests demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Why it matters
The refusal reinforces the judiciary's adherence to institutional boundaries between judicial review and political grievances raised by opposition parties.
