CJI Declines Rahul And Kharge Meeting Request Over Pending Court Cases

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has declined a meeting request from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi regarding electoral discrepancies and protests. In a letter released on Monday, the CJI stated that discussing issues already pending before the Supreme Court would contravene the separation of powers and judicial propriety. The Congress leaders had sought an appointment to submit a memorandum concerning the functioning of the Election Commission of India, metro station closures, train cancellations, and student arrests. CJI Kant emphasized that the top court lacks administrative powers to handle these grievances outside judicial proceedings. The exchange follows recent demonstrations organized in Delhi by the Cockroach Janta Party demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Why it matters

The judicial response reinforces institutional boundaries between the judiciary and political leadership on matters under active legal review.
