CJI Says Judiciary Proactively Tackled Digital Arrest Scams

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated that the Indian judiciary has proactively addressed emerging fraudulent schemes like digital arrest scams. Speaking at the 43rd International Symposium on Economic Crime in London, he highlighted the Supreme Court's suo motu cognisance of such scams, where fraudsters impersonate officials over video calls. The court has directed the Union and states to assess the extent of the problem and called for creating a distinct offence with proportionate penalties. Justice Kant also cited judicial interventions to rectify alleged misuse of laws like the PMLA, including a ruling that grounds for arrest must be provided in writing.
