CJI Surya Kant Blames Vehicular Emissions for Delhi Pollution

· India · Times of India, The Hindu

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has identified vehicular emissions as a primary driver of the severe air pollution currently affecting Delhi-NCR. During a suo motu hearing on Friday, the Supreme Court bench emphasized that while stubble burning remains a concern, transport and local pollution sources require urgent attention. Amicus curiae Aparajita Singh noted that pollution levels in the capital remain in the severe category. The court suggested that authorities should provide machinery to gram panchayats to assist farmers with stubble management, as individual farmers cannot afford the equipment. The bench also discussed the potential for creating warehousing facilities to store collected stubble as a source of income.

Why it matters

The Supreme Court's focus on local pollution sources like transport signals a potential shift in regulatory pressure toward urban infrastructure and traffic management in the capital region.
