Chief Justice of India Surya Kant sharply criticized a Greater Noida executive magistrate on Wednesday for issuing a show cause notice to a university student over a protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Heading a three-judge bench, the CJI questioned how a magistrate could violate a clear Supreme Court order barring penal action against students involved in the 36-day Cockroach Janta Party agitation. Senior Advocate Bishwajit Bhattacharyya mentioned the matter orally, noting that Gautam Buddha University second-year student Akshat Tripathi was ordered to furnish a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Police reports had alleged that Tripathi was spreading anti-government talks and instigating students to join the protest. The Supreme Court directed the petitioner's counsel to place the relevant facts and notice on record as the bench seeks a formal explanation from the authorities.
