Chief Justice Surya Kant addressed the Vice Chancellors' Conclave 2.0 at National Law University, Jodhpur on 16 August 2026, urging Indian law institutions to take a leading role in shaping how technology reshapes the legal system. He said the legal profession can no longer remain a late adopter and rejected an outright prohibition of generative AI in legal education. The CJI added that academic integrity and responsible use of AI must become core components of law curricula, and that students should learn to question assumptions, verify conclusions and exercise independent judgement. He noted that AI tools can read thousands of precedents quickly, identify legal and regulatory risks, and support courts and dispute‑resolution mechanisms, but familiarity alone is insufficient for future lawyers.
