CJI Surya Kant Defends Supreme Court Access Amid Opposition Row
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined to disclose the contents of a letter exchanged with Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding a rejected meeting request. Rahul Gandhi and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikanjun Kharge had sought a meeting to hand over a memorandum demanding an end to vote tampering allegations, the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, halting of electoral roll revisions, and a return to paper ballots. Speaking at an NHRC event in New Delhi, CJI Surya Kant stated that he had responded to the letter the same night and maintained its confidentiality, suggesting reporters ask the opposition leaders about the contents. When asked how elected representatives should voice concerns, the CJI emphasised that the doors of the Supreme Court remain open to all citizens and lawmakers in accordance with the law. He declined to comment on Delhi protests, categorizing the situation as a law and order issue.
Why it matters
The exchange underscores political tensions over election oversight bodies while the judiciary maintains strict institutional boundaries on direct political meetings.
